Why I Think Mo' Salah Doesn't Really Deserve To Be Crowned PFA Player Of The Season

Let's put aside any form of partiality in this first and understand where i'm coming from;

Salah didn't win the PFA Player of the Year gong because he was the most consistent or better player of the 2017-2018 Premier League season..."

"He won majorly because of "RECENCY BIAS"!!!" - Ufuoma Egbamuno

I totally agree with my Port Harcourt Femi & The Gang Sports Presenter Ufuoma Egbamuno on this. A lot of friends have said he deserves it more, but I ask; "What did he do to make him deserve the award?" What exactly was the criteria used in the fans judging who should be crowned PFA Player of the Year?

You score 31 goals in the Premier League, and 4 games away from breaking club and league goal scoring records, but yet cannot use all the goals to help your team win any trophy, whereas someone who was also influential to his team got two English trophies and is even miles ahead of 2nd & 3rd placed Man Utd and Liverpool respectively.

If you tell me he is the highest goal scorer, is that now the basis? Is De Bruyne not the highest assist provider? Is Kevin De Bruyne's work meant to be scoring goals? Lets take a quick sneak peak...

Few seasons ago when Leicester won the league, Harry Kane was the highest goal scorer (correct me if i'm wrong) but it was Riyad Mahrez who won the PFA.. Why? Effectiveness!!! His influence was useful in helping his team win the Premier League! All of Harry Kane's goals amounted to absolutely nothing for Tottenham.

Now again, last season, Cheslea won the Premier League, Harry Kane again was the highest goal scorer but it was N'golo Kante who won the PFA... Why? Influence and effectiveness having an end product which was the Premier League trophy! His workrate as the link to Chelsea's defence and attack surges all had a positive effect on the team. Again, all of Harry Kane's goals amounted to absolutely nothing for Tottenham.

Now, how can someone who had an instrumental season at the heart of all of City's attacks with multiple man-of-the-match performances with trophies to show for it and is also topping the assists charts not win the award? Are we using few months to judge or the entire season in perspective? Are we judging based on number of goals, or number of assists, or number of trophies won, or just by sentiments? Are we judging based on who is in form in the last 3 months?

As at December 2017, who is that one player in the Premier League touted as the overwhelming favourite for the PFA Player of the Year? Who was that Premier League player who was touted as a possible competition for Messi and Ronaldo in the race for the 2018 Ballon d’Or?

His name wasn't Mo Salah.

As at December 2017, Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne was heads and shoulders above everyone and at the heart of a City team who were being compared at the time to the Invincibles.

So, has De Bruyne suddenly become poor now? Or is there something against City players? This is even how Kun Aguero has never been nominated in the Season's Best XI even with him being the highest goal scorer (same rubbish excuse fans use to award Salah the PFA) up until this season when truthfully, he should not be in the XI for this season.

It was this same issue that allowed one player in 2010 to win the Ballon D'or just because of only one sensational month in a whole year where he was injured for up to 6 months! The same way Ronaldinho beat Thierry Henry to the award in 2004; Messi beat Sneidjer in 2010 and Ronaldo beat Ribery years ago is the same ticket that has given Mo Salah this year’s PFA Player of the Year..

Sentiments! Bias!! I rest my case!! Well done, English FA!
