Nigeria's Falconets Lose World Cup Opener To Germany

As the Falconets suffered a slim 1-0 defeat in their opening Group D game in Saint-Malo

Nigeria's female Under 20 national team The Falconets, were beaten by Germany 1-0 earlier today in the on-going FIFA Women's World Cup taking place in France.

A goalless first 45 produced little between both sides who have met previously in the final of this same competition back in 2010 and also 2014.

The Europeans were the better side at the start, but the Falconets seemed more confident in the closing stages of the first half.

But the decisive moment of the encounter came in the 69th minute when the Germans took the lead following a corner which resulted in a header that struck the crossbar. The loose ball fell the way of Stefanie Saunders who knocked home from close range to give the Germans the lead.

The Falconets were somewhat unlucky not to draw level few minutes later when a free-kick into the Germany box saw the ball fall to Peace Efih, whose strike hit the post and bounced away to safety.

Coach of the African side Christopher Danjuma will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways when they face Haiti this Thursday, as Nigeria sits bottom of the group while the Germans are topping with three points.
